Important Vehicle Tax Changes

You may already be aware that the government has scheduled an increase on the first year Road Fund Licence (RFL or what we used to call ‘road tax’ on 1st April 2025. The amount you pay for RFL is based on CO2 emissions.

If you are thinking of changing your car, we urge you to change before 1st April 2025, when these changes will come into place.

We have a great stock of Land Rover vehicles available for immediate delivery, so that from 1st March you can drive away in a new 25 plate vehicle. Please contact our sales team to find out more.

Changes to the taxing of Electric Vehicles

Additionally, electric vehicles (EVs) will no longer exempt from paying Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), or car tax. Although EVs registered after the 1 April date are only liable for a first-year rate of £10 until 2029, those that cost more than £40,000 will also have to pay the £425 a year 'Expensive Car Supplement', otherwise known as the luxury car tax.

EVs registered between 1 April 2017 and 31 March 2025 will now have to pay the same standard rate of road tax (now £195 a year) as all other motorists.

When do you have to pay your car tax?

If you own a vehicle, you will automatically receive a reminder before the tax is due to expire, which is always at the end of a given month.

In other words, if your vehicle is taxed for 12 months from 1 January, you’ll need to renew before the end of December.

You can tax a car for six or 12 months.

You’re also liable for road tax as soon as you take ownership of a car.
